'Say Something if you See Something' campaign

Speak out about child sexual exploitation

Many of our young people display highly challenging behaviour and come to us having suffered traumatic starts in life through no fault of their own. Enduring and living through many subsequent years, where numerous changes and transitions have resulted in mainly negative experiences of human failure, including physical, mental and sexual abuse. Addressing these issues is something we do daily, helping our young people feel safe and supported so they are able to achieve their full potential.

Sexual exploitation can happen to any young person – whatever their background, age, gender, race or sexuality or wherever they live. Risk factors include:

  • a history of abuse, particularly sexual abuse
  • recent bereavement or loss
  • homelessness
  • low self-esteem or self-confidence
  • being a young carer
  • being in or leaving care
  • links to a gang through relatives, peers or intimate relationships
  • living in a gang-affected neighbourhood
  • lacking friends from the same age group

As part of the ongoing ‘Say Something if you See Something’ campaign, the county’s taxi drivers, hoteliers and licensed premises are being asked to support the police and local authorities to recognise the signs of child sexual exploitation and help keep children and young people safe across Northamptonshire.
